Program Description

The Special Milk Program (SMP) provides milk to children in schools and non-profit residential child care institutions that do not participate in other Federal child nutrition meal service programs. Schools in the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs may also participate in the SMP to provide milk to children in half-day pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs where children do not have access to the school meal programs. The program reimburses institutions for the milk they serve.

Program Requirements

Children in a school or institution that participate in the Special Milk Program can receive milk. Schools may elect to offer free milk to low-income children. To see if you meet income eligibility requirements, please visit the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI) websiteand see the current eligibility guidelines.

In order to qualify, you must have an annual household income (before taxes) that is below the following amounts:

8 $78,403

*For households with more than eight people, add $7,992 per additional person. Always check with the appropriate managing agency to ensure the most accurate guidelines.

Application Process

To apply for the Special Milk program, contact your child’s school or camp to find out if it participates in the Special Milk Program. The Federal agency Child Nutrition Programs manages this program. For further information on the Special Milk Program, see the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) website.
