Program Description

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.

Program Requirements

In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the state of Iowa. Pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to age 5 are eligible. They must be individually determined to be at “nutritional risk” by a health professional.

In order to qualify, you must have an annual household income (before taxes) that is below the following amounts:

*For households with more than eight people, add $7,733 per additional person. Always check with the appropriate managing agency to ensure the most accurate guidelines.

To see if you are eligible for WIC, you may also use the WIC Prescreening Tool. This Prescreening Tool is not an application for WIC. To apply for WIC benefits, you must make an appointment at your WIC local agency.

Application Process

To apply for WIC, contact the WIC state or local agency serving your area, to schedule an appointment. Applicants will be advised about what to bring to the WIC appointment to help determine eligibility.
