Program Description
Outpatient dental treatment is available to eligible Veterans and may include the full spectrum of diagnostic, surgical, restorative, and preventive procedures. In many cases, however, the law permits only limited kinds of care.
Program Requirements
To begin with, you are encouraged to enroll in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system (or qualify based on one of the exceptions in the law). Go to “Medical Benefits Package” to see the program requirements.
Eligibility for outpatient dental care is not the same as for most other VA medical benefits and is categorized into classes. If you are eligible for VA dental care under Class I, IIC, or IV you are eligible for any necessary dental care to maintain or restore oral health and masticatory function, including repeat care. Other classes have time and/or service limitations.
For details on eligibility, download the Dental Benefits Eligibility requirements document.
Generally, in order to receive VA benefits and services the Veteran/Servicemember’s character of discharge or service must be under conditions other than dishonorable (e.g., honorable, under honorable conditions, general). However, individuals receiving undesirable, bad conduct, and other types of dishonorable discharges may qualify for VA benefits depending on a determination made by a VA Regional Office.
Application Process
To apply, download the 10-10EZ or 10-10EZR form or apply directly online.
You can also apply in person by visiting a VA Medical Center or clinic nearest you.
