Program Description
Clothing Allowance is an annual sum of money paid to any Veteran who, because of a service-connected disability:
- Wears or uses a prosthetic or orthopedic appliance which tends to wear or tear clothing, OR
- Uses medication, which a physician has prescribed for a skin condition that is due to a service-connected disability and causes irreparable damage to the Veteran’s outer garments
Program Requirements
You are encouraged to enroll in the VA health care system (or qualify based on one of the exceptions in the law). Go to Medical Benefits Package to view the program requirements.
The disability for which you are using the prosthetic or orthopedic appliance must be service-connected.
Generally, in order to receive VA benefits and services, the Veteran/Servicemembers character of discharge or service must be under conditions other than dishonorable (e.g. honorable, under honorable conditions, general). However, individuals receiving undesirable, bad conduct and other types of dishonorable discharges may qualify for VA benefits depending on a determination made by VA Regional Office.
Application Process
To complete an application, use VA Form 10-8678, “Application for Annual Clothing Allowance.”
Applicants should send their applications to the Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service (PSASat) at the nearest VA medical center. You can visit our Facility Locator to locate your nearest VA health care facility.
Veterans with a non-static clothing allowance must apply each year before August 1st. Veterans with static allowances do not have to apply each year.
