Program Description

The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provides free health insurance to South Dakota children who meet certain eligibility guidelines. CHIP covers doctor appointments, hospital stay, dental and vision services, prescription drugs, mental health care and other medical services.

CHIP provides health insurance coverage to uninsured children whose family income is up to 200 percent of the Federal poverty level (monthly income of $3,067 for a family of four). Children who already have private health insurance may also be eligible for CHIP paying deductibles, co-payments and other medical services not covered by their private policy.

Program Requirements

In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the state of South Dakota, under 19 years of age, not covered by health insurance (including Medicaid), and a U.S. national, citizen, legal alien, or permanent resident.

In order to qualify, you must have an annual household income (before taxes) that is below the following amounts:

3 $40,840
4 $49,200
5 $57,560
6 $65,920
7 $74,280
8 $82,640

*For households with more than eight people, add $8,360 per additional person. Always check with the appropriate managing agency to ensure the most accurate guidelines.
