Program Description
The Special Milk Program (SMP) provides milk to children in schools and other institutions that do not participate in other Federal meal service programs. Schools participating in the National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program may also participate in the SMP if the milk is provided to children who do not have access to the school meal programs (for example, children in half-day kindergarten and pre-kindergarten programs).
The program reimburses schools and other institutions for milk served.
Program Requirements
Any child at a participating school or other institution may receive half pints of milk through the SMP.
If a child’s household meets the income eligibility guidelines for free school meals, then they are eligible for free milk through the SMP. Please visit the School Meals Income Eligibility Guidelines webpage to determine income eligibility.
