Program Description

The Agricultural Management Assistance Program (AMA) helps agricultural producers use conservation to manage risk and address natural resource issues through natural resources conservation. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) administers the AMA conservation provisions, while the Agricultural Marketing Service and the Risk Management Agency implement other provisions under AMA.

Program Requirements

Applicants must own or control the land within an identified AMA state and comply with adjusted gross income limitation provisions.

Eligible land includes cropland, rangeland, grassland, pastureland, non-industrial forestland, and other private land that produces crops or livestock where risk may be mitigated through operation diversification or change in resource conservation practices.

AMA is available in 16 states: Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Application Process

NRCS will help eligible producers develop an AMA plan of operations, which will become the basis of the AMA contract. AMA applications will be ranked based on a number of factors, including the environmental benefits and cost effectiveness of the proposal.

Applications for AMA are accepted on a continuous basis; however, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) establishes application “cut-off” dates for evaluation and ranking of eligible applications. Visit your local USDA NRCS Service Center to apply or visit the “Get Started with NRCS” page.
