Program Description

National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a Federal entitlement program open to public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. Lunch is available to all children at participating schools, and the meals must meet specific nutritional requirements to receive Federal funds.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) designed the School Breakfast Program (SBP) to meet the needs of children who arrive at school hungry. Children seldom make up nutrients missed at breakfast at other meals. In 2007 the General Assembly enacted legislation that requires schools that have 15 percent or more of their enrollment eligible for free or reduced-price meal benefits to offer the breakfast program.
